Synopsis

One morning, the world wakes up different. Every man has disappeared. There is no explanation, no warning, no certainty about what has really happened.

In this transformed world, women must learn to survive, and then to rebuild. Gradually, ONYX is born — a new civilisation founded on the hope of a different future: new institutions, new cities, laboratories, schools, Councils, and a society that believes it can learn from the mistakes of the old world.

But rebuilding a civilisation does not necessarily mean understanding humanity. At the heart of this new society move several women whose destinies will gradually intersect — among them Aisha El-Sayed, an archaeologist who gradually becomes the moral conscience of ONYX, and Sofia Ramirez, brilliant and fascinating, but also a manipulator obsessed with power.

For the absence of men has not made violence disappear. It has not eliminated loneliness. It has not abolished ambition. And above all, it has not erased the desire to control others. Power belongs to no gender — it belongs to those who choose to wield it.

Inspiration

The inspiration for writing Women Without Men came from Haruki Murakami’s Men Without Women. In his book, the Japanese author tells seven stories about single and even married men and their particular relationships with women. Kanage wanted to explore the opposite idea — Women Without Men — but from a completely different perspective. Rather than focusing on romantic relationships, he imagined a world in which all men, and everything male, including young boys, had mysteriously disappeared. The novel explores what happens when women are suddenly left to navigate a world without men: how they adapt, how society changes, and how they confront questions of identity, power, freedom, fear, and human connection.

“A novel about women, but above all about human beings.”

About the Book

Women Without Men does not solve a practical problem the way a self-help book does. It addresses a human and societal problem — six of them, in fact. Open each one.
